Five Reasons You Should Fall In Love With Lugano

Lugano is the largest town in the holiday region of Ticino, the Italian speaking Canton of Switzerland. Me and my husband decided to spend some time there, during the most perfect spring day! Being just an hour and a half from my hometown, I regret I didn’t visit it earlier: I have been in Switzerland before, but never visited Lugano and… I fell in love!

Piazza della Riforma

It’s a vivacious city

The city centre is full of chic restaurants, stylish boutiques, art galleries. We enjoyed wandering around the porticoed alleys and had a drink at one of the many pavement cafes. Piazza della Riforma is the main square with the city hall and many restaurants and bistrots.

There is a nice climate

Never too hot and never too cold, Lugano has pleasant temperatures all year round thanks to its mild Mediterranean climate. This makes the city the perfect place to enjoy the summer outside. We visited Lugano at the beginning of June and found many flowers in bloom and a pleasant breeze coming from the lake!

It’s green

One of the things I enjoy the most are green cities, and Lugano is very green! If you stay here make sure not to miss Parco Ciani, a beautiful 63,000 square metre park on the lakeside. You can find locals reading a book, having a pic-nic and sunbathing among the flower beds and ancient trees. By the lakeside promenade are the Belvedere Gardens where you can enjoy tropical plants and modern works of art.

There is a beautiful lake

The lake is named after the city and is situated on the border between southern Switzerland and northern Italy. You can easily take a boat ride or do other summer activities here! To enjoy a wonderful panorama of the town with its lake and mountains, take the funicular railway from Cassarate on the outskirts of Lugano.

It’s a nice place to live in

Lugano looks like a calm, relaxed yet vivacious city to live in. The German writer Herman Hesse moved very close to Lugano (in Montagnola, where now you can visit its museum) in 1919. If you are interested in art and culture, there are amazing pieces exhibited at the Museo Cantonale d’Arte – Klee, Jawlensky, Renoir and Degas just to name a few artists!

I’ll surely come back to Lugano, and will probably find many other reasons to fall in love with the city!
